Our Mission

Who Are We?

We are a group of passionate, committed DIR divers.

Some of us are relative newbies. Others are amongst the most experienced, skilled divers around. But the one thing we all have in common is a desire to share our collective experience, expertise and enthusiasm with others.

After all, in BC we are blessed with some of the finest cold-water diving to be had anywhere in the world. Is it a surprise that we want to share it with everyone?

Our Philosophy

We believe that the DIR system of diving is the safest, most efficient and most fun way to dive, bar none.

There's no particular mystery to DIR: it is nothing more than the highly-refined application of common sense. It is, however, is a multi-faceted and subtle system. It does not readily lend itself to soundbites or marketing slogans. The true essence of DIR is one that tends to gradually reveal itself over a period of time to those willing to work at it.

Because of this, we feel that reading about DIR and taking a course, while necessary steps, are by themselves not enough. Diving regularly with an experienced mentor is critical if a diver is to continue to progress and truly "get it".

Our Goal

We want more people to discover the right way to dive. And once they've discovered it, we want them to keep diving.

It's that simple. The DIR community in BC is smaller than it should be. We want to grow the community by providing opportunities for divers to discover DIR, to learn more about it, to get the training they need, to become active participants in our community, and to stay challenged and stimulated so they keep diving.

Our Plan

Over the next few weeks and months, The DIR Project will be rolling out a comprehensive program to serve the needs of the BC DIR community. The program will include:
  1. Promoting DIR through a program of regular seminars and demo days in partnership with local dive shops.
  2. Providing a comprehensive source of authoritative, accurate information on DIR through this website.
  3. Matching new DIR divers with experienced Mentors.
  4. Organizing and promoting DIR courses taught by the finest dive educators around.
  5. Integrating divers into the DIR community by welcoming them and keeping them informed and involved in our activities.
  6. Sustaining DIR divers' interest in the sport by organizing a constant stream of interesting dive trips and special projects to keep them challenged and motivated.

The DIR Project is driven by the passion of an all-volunteer crew. We don't charge a penny for any of the services we provide to our community.
