HMCS Saskatchewan and HMCS Cape Breton Aug 16

Greetings fellowdiving cogniscenti!

Since it has been a bit quiet around here I thought I would post our latest wreck diving experience. Mark Gottfried, Chris Fenton and I took a trip with Diver's Choice to do a couple of dives on our two local artificial reefs this past Sunday. We used the dive as an experience building opportunity to work on our Tech 2 skills and carried two decompression gases, a bottom stage and a scooter, and we had a blast! The current was a bit strong on the surface and with all that freight you feel a bit like a sea anchor. Enter the diver's best friend: the scooter. Pull the trigger and relax and the next thing you know we are at the marker buoy. We started on the Saskatchewan and headed for the engine room but somehow got sidetracked and ran line for 30 min or so around the electrical room. Electric room--Engine Room-- whatever......you need both to run the boat right? I ran line the first time and screwed up a couple of times but managed to get us back to the same spot. Deco was uneventful except for Chris almost getting rubbed out by a couple of errant lions manes jellyfish... It is that time of year again so keep your head up and watch your buddies six.

The second dive was on the Cape Breton and we descended down into the engine room (the real engine room.....not to be confused with the electrical room, the refrigeration room, or any other rooms..) and ran some line around that room. This must have been a pretty impressive location when it was full of engines and running. I bet it is 40' from the top of the skylights to the bottom. Very cool experience though. Mark ran line this time and while I thought it was a bit slack, he seemed to think it was okay :-)

Deco can be boring at the best of times, but this time we tried to "spice" it up a bit. Mark and I have dove together a lot and almost have the ability to read each other's minds.........I am sure Chris thought we were both losing it........

All in all, a couple of very fun dives with a solid team. Except for Mark and Chris. Zing...........All joking aside, it is very cool when you can do what are relatively complex dives and because of proper training and practise, turn them into enjoyable outings with a couple of friends.

Best,

Guy Shockey

The jellyfish that really freaked me out was the one floating inside the wreck right over your secondary tie and our exit!
