Diver's Choice: HMCS Cape Breton, March 29th, 2009
Monday, March 30, 2009 at 10:37AM Greetings!
Yesterday was probabably one of the best days for visibility on the Nanaimo wrecks that I have ever seen. It was almost tropical as we could see the Cape Breton below us as we did our 20' stops. The ambient light on the wreck was also amazing. You really only needed your light for poking into holes and looking inside the wreck but anythiing on the outside was sunny and bright. The weather was a bit windy in the morning but settled down nicely in the afternoon and we had two great dives on the 'Breton. We also saw the mother of all cabezon fish!
This was DIR Project member Richard Parker's first two trimix dives after completing the UTD Tech I course with UTD instructor Mark Gottfried last weekend. I am happy to report that Richard was solid as a rock and we all had a great couple of dives. We ran line the first dive and played around a bit with the reel and then just did a leisurely cruise around the wreck on the second dive. Richard's dive team consisted of Jeremy and myself but since Jeremy and I are basically lazy, we made Richard do all the gas and deco calculations. However he did draw the line at carrying our gear down to the boat. Rumour has it that he was actually in the parking lot waiting for us for an hour before we got there but I bet if I looked hard enough I could find a Tim Horton's receipt somewhere in his truck.......
Chris Fenton and Kim Anderson also joined us on the dive and practised some stage bottle and deco bottle work as they are preparing for their GUE Tech II course with Dan MacKay in a few weeks. We could see them occasionally as they were laying line inside the wreck.
Oh, and by the way, in case Blair wanted to know, desert on the boat yesterday was strawberry and rhubarb pie with whip cream........Blair, I grabbed a piece for you and mailed it to you this morning........
